Maine School Food Service Association
School Meals. . . Lighting the Way for Education
Message from our President, Barbara Rose

This school year started with a “hopping” good time at MSFSA’s Fifth
Annual Summer Conference at the Grand Summit Resort & Conference
Center, Sunday River.

Pre-conference classes for certification such as CPR and Sanitation were
offered this year along with classes on Menu Planning, Nutrition 101,
Veggie & Fruit Galore, Now You’re Talking, Back to Basics, Co-ops,
Chapter Leadership and Achieving Customer Satisfaction, Legislation Can
be Fun, Maine Harvest Lunch, Consolidation, Desserts – 5% Rule, Herbs &
Spices, and a Student Round Table with the Student Nutrition Team from
York High School.

Monday night’s Bingo fundraiser raised $1200.00 for the American Cancer
Society.

Our Keynote speaker, Chef Jon Ashton, from Liverpool, England, captured
the audience with his witty banter and cooking demonstration on how to
improve the eating habits and food choices of our children.
Legislation

Your Legislative team’s hard work has paid off “ the Maine Legislature
appropriated $80,000 for each of the next two school years for our School
Breakfast Programs”. The Vitamin Grant enabled us to meet with local
farmers and to Agricultural conferences and promote Farm to School
programs. The Grant also helped fund Healthy Edge, Now You’re Cooking
and Sanitation classes so our members could become SNA certified.
Maine Menu Day

A day in September had schools throughout the State serving food items
that were grown and processed in Maine. Some of the foods used in the
menus were apples, beef, blueberries, broccoli, cheese, fish, flour,
potatoes and many more food items.  Many “helping hands” helped to
make this day a great success.

MSFSA’s 24 – carrot members are committed to providing healthy meals
and promoting Nutrition education to all of Maine’s school children.
